Every year, Qualcomm tries to launch a new SoC to keep the mid-range devices running smoothly while not giving them anything top notch at all! And here is the Big Brother od SD675: The SD678.
The new SoC primarily improves on the photography and connectivity department, while still keeping battery life in mind. It is an Octa-Core CPU built on the 11nm LLP process. As per the official press release, the SoC brings a minute performance upgrade over the predecessor. Accordingly, it has a Kryo 460 CPU clocked at 2.2GHz compared to 2.0GHz on the Snapdragon 675. However, the GPU on the 678 is the same Adreno 612 but Qualcomm says it has increased the performance.
For the uninitiated, Kryo cores are custom CPU cores built by Qualcomm on top of the ARM architecture.
The SoC supports display up to FHD+ with a max resolution of 2520×1080 pixels and 10-bit color depth. For cameras, it has a 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra™ 250L ISP. This supports a single camera up to 192MP and a single/double camera with MFNR( Multiple Frame Noise reduction or in simple words, less noise in images ) up to 25/16MP respectively.
The chip can shoot upto 4K 30FPS, and supports portrait mode, low-light, laser auto-focus 5x Optical zoom, slow-mo(up to 1080p at 120fps), and more. The chip also supports the new and efficient video storing format, HEVC along with EIS for better stabilitywhile shooting videos.
To be noted, Qualcomm says that although the GPU is same as before, it is optimised for top end games built on popular gaming engines. And we don’t believe them at all 🙂
The SD678 has the same X12 LTE modem. As the name suggests it doesn’t support 5G. However, it supports peak download, upload speeds of 600,150 Mbps respectively. So, no 5G connectivity for all the mid-range peasants :p
What do you think about this chipset? Will you buy any phone that has it? Or you love 5G and its no connectivity feature? Let us know in the comments below! Oh, and also check out the all new SD888 SoC!
